There aren’t that many hot air balloon festivals in Canada, but there is a handful of them. Compared to other countries with great hot air balloon scenes and more active organizations, Canada is just getting there.
But that does not mean we don’t have anything to offer when it comes to massive balloons taking flight.
If you want to experience hot air balloon brilliance, here are the top festivals you need to experience at least once in your life.
International Balloon Festival of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu – Quebec
There aren’t many hot air balloon festivals here in Canada. But the ones that exist, are recognized all over the globe.
The International Balloon Festival of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, that takes place every August is the largest hot air balloon gathering in all of Canada. With more than 450,000 visitors per year and nearly 100 balloons, this is truly a can’t miss experience.
In the morning, you get to see balloons take flight and cover a small part of the sky. At night, you also get to see balloons take flight only this time, they are glowing. They call that the nighttime glows.
Other than hot air balloons, there is also live music from local bands and artists, crafts fair, rides, and of course a lot of foods. In 2017, they launched the first-ever Pop Challenge. It is a race wherein the course is a field with massive inflatable structures so you can go crazy and run around.
This festival truly put Canada, actually, Quebec on the map. Every year, the number of participants continues to grow.
Heritage Inn International Balloon Festival – Alberta
The Heritage Inn International Balloon Festival is not as big as Saint-Jean, but it is on its way. This festival is Alberta’s very own festival. This festival is made up of hundreds of pilots, vendors, and volunteers.
Tens of thousands of visitors are expected to come this year in September, but there are sure to be restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Nonetheless, we are confident that this year’s festival will push through given that the sponsors and organizers have worked together to ensure top-notch safety protocols for all. There are still upcoming updates on the festival’s schedule and events. We are hoping for exciting and new activities this year.
Atlantic Balloon Festival – New Brunswick
Atlantic Balloon Festival is known as the most colourful festival in Sussex, New Brunswick. At this festival, you’ll never run out of things to do. You can ride hot air balloons, eat a variety of snacks, buy some local produce from the indoor market, enjoy some amusement rides, and of course, meet some amazing people. Make sure to experience all of these hot air balloon festivals at least once.
